Work parties are an integral part of USC as they were how the Club was built. All Members are encouraged to participate in a work party every year which assists both the Club with maintenance of its lodges and the Member with Priority Points to secure bookings. A Work Party Levy is charged in arrears to Members who do not complete a work party each year.
If you wish to bring anyone aside from just the Member applying for the work party, please clearly note on application. Beds are allocated firstly to Members only and then, if vacancies allow, to additional persons. Generally, children under the age of 15 are not permitted to attend work parties without consent from the organiser.
Members 70 years and over who wish to attend a work party need to speak with the organiser prior to applying for a work party. Unfortunately, due to liability issues they will be restricted in what they are allowed to do.
Please note that, for the reason outlined above, the Work Party Levy does not apply to members over 70 years of age. Unfortunately, in recent years a number of Members have booked but failed to attend work parties or provide reasonable notice or explanation as to why they can’t attend. This affects both the catering for the weekend and other Members who would have liked to attend. As such a penalty fee of double the Work Party Levy has been implemented by the Committee for non-attendance without adequate reason or sufficient notice of at least 72 hours.
New Procedures for 2024
To improve our record keeping and administration regarding work parties, there are new procedures in place for 2024. You will now be required to apply to attend a work party online. Work parties will be advertised by email to members and always appear in the new events calendar. They will also be displayed on this page (see below). Each work party will be advertised with an ID (It will look like ‘USC-WRK-nnn’ where ‘nnn’ is number). When you apply online, there is a field where you enter this ID.
Please ensure your dietary requirements are up to date in Clubman as these will be communicated with the Work Party Leader to assist with meal preparations.
More Opportunities
With the changing nature of the Club’s operations and to provide members more opportunities to contribute to the Club you can now earn priority points and avoid the levy in other ways. For example: Being a party leader in a lodge during your stay, participating in a sub-committee to organise a social event or providing graphic design for the website. This will allow opportunities for members to contribute to the Club if they are unable to attend work parties. If you perform any activity that earns priority points during a calendar year it will be recorded and you will be exempt from paying the levy in the following year.
